Kufstein is a town in Tirol, on the border of the Free State of Bavaria, and administrative centre for the district of Kufstein. The town is located in the Tirol lowlands and the Lower Inn Valley. One of the most popular tourist destinations in Tirol is Kufstein Fortress. In 1205 the fortress was mentioned for the first time in documents, and has been transformed in the course of the centuries from a castle to an impressive stronghold. Elaborate restoration work in the last few years and a new mobile canopy for the fortress arena on Josefsburg make this emblem of the much celebrated "Pearl of the Tirol" even more attractive for all sorts of events. A versatile range of sights will impress all those interested in culture and history.
The town straddles the River Inn, between the landmark mountain, the Pendling, and Maistaller Berg to the west, Thierberg to the north, the Kaiser mountain range and Stadtberg to the east and Kufstein Forest to the south. The town is located at around 500 metres sea level, at the exit of the Alpine Inn Valley and just a few kilometres away from the Bavarian Alpine foothills. In the district area there is also the Kaisertal, the last remaining valley in Austria which has no road access, yet it has since been decided after years of political discussions that the districts of Kufstein and Ebbs and the Kaisertal are to be opened up by means of a tunnel. In the municipal area numerous streams flow into the Inn, the largest are both from the right of the Inn, Weißache in the south and Kaiserbach, which creates the city limits in the north. Other influxes to the right of the Inn are Mitterndorfer, Kien and Kreuzbach, and to the left - Rochen and Morsbach. Four hills, and smaller mountains are to be found in the centre of the town: Zellerberg, Festungsberg, Kalvarienberg (Heldenhügel) and Lausbichl. On the left side of the valley there are the Stimmer-, Thier-, Pfrill-, Läng-, Hecht- and Egelsee lakes (in which Stimmer- and Thiersee are already located in the neighbouring districts). In the south-west in the past few centuries some lakes and ponds have all silted up to the small Maistaller Lacke. For the last few years this– just like the Egelsee – has been designated a conservation area. The valley floor runs the length of the entire town, sloping down to the Inn, which is especially evident at the lower town square.
